Weight loss
Introduction Weight loss is the process of losing weight. The goal of weight loss is to achieve a healthy body mass index (BMI), which is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared. A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal; a BMI below 18.5 indicates underweight, while a BMI above 25 indicates overweight or obese.[1] Achieving and maintaining an appropriate weight can help prevent or treat many diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol levels.[2] In addition to improving overall health outcomes for those who are overweight or obese it has been shown that losing just 5% of initial body weight through dieting can reduce the risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome[3].
